  Traugott served an apprenticeship of three years as a carpenter and joiner, commencing at an early age of 14 years.
  He traveled over Germany and Switzerland for three years, then returned home to join the army.  He enlisted March 24, 1845, Neaner Calvalry and served six years as Corporal, taking part in Rebellion 1848-1849.  Honorably discharged April 1, 1851.
  He began traveling and working at his trade but sojourned principally in Baden.  In April 1853 he set sail for American taking passage at Antiwerp.  After voyage of 70 days, during which vessel encountered severe storms landed safely at New York Harbor.
  He then proceeded to the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, and worked at his trade as carpenter.
  Traugott and his wife moved to Chicago, IL at which time Cholera broke out, until August 1854, then to Goshen, IN and engaged in building and contracting until 1863.
  The family then moved to Kansas locating on land in the vicinity of Manhattan, KS, where he put up residence for himself and operated as before until spring of 1870.  He now resolved to turn attention to farming, and homesteaded 160 acres of land, besides pre-empting 40 acres adjoining, in Jackson Township, Riley County.  He was successful as a tiller of soil.
