Tom Newton was born in 1852 at Little Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Newton, formerly Broughton, and her husband John Newton, a farm bailiff. Tom appears in the 1861 census living with his parents and two brothers at nearby Heckington.
By 1871 he was working as a farm servant at Great Hale.
On 15th April 1878, aged 26, he married Ann Walton at Great Hale. She was eleven years his senior, being 37 when they married. They do not appear to have had any children.
Both the 1881 and 1891 censuses find Tom and Ann living at Quarrington on the edge of the town of Sleaford. Tom made his living as a threshing machine proprietor. In 1881, Ann's nephew Benjamin was living with them, and in 1891, Ann's niece Annie Walton was living with them.
Ann died in 1893, aged 53.
Three years later, Tom married again. His second wife was Annie Batty, who was seventeen years his junior. When they married, once of the witnesses was Annie Walton, niece of Tom's first wife, who had been living with them in 1891.
Tom and Annie Batty went on to have two children together. They appear in the 1901 and 1911 censuses still living in the Quarrington area.
Annie appears to have died in 1920, aged 51. Tom survived her by three years and died on 26th February 1923, aged 71.

There was also a Thomas Newton whose birth was registered in the Sleaford district the previous year, who also appears to have been the son of a John and Elizabeth Newton from Little Hale. However, the Tom Newton who married Ann Walton consistently used the name Tom for himself rather than Thomas (signing Tom on both his marriage records), and indicated that his father was a farmer, which fits with the family of John Newton and Elizabeth Broughton, who were living at Heckington in the 1861 census with John described as a farm bailiff. The other family (John Newton and Elizabeth Woulds) were still at Little Hale in 1861 and that John was an agricultural labourer. The Thomas born in 1851 appears to have later moved to Hull.
