Family sources indicate that Tom and Margaret were never married and that they were first cousins.
Other undocumented sources have shown this Tom Halbert as Thomas Jefferson Halbert, an illegitimate son of Elizabeth F. Halbert and William Jefferson Turner. This has not been confirmed, however, William Jefferson Turner was a brother to Margaret's mother Louise Turner and would explain how they were related.
All sources seem to indicate that this is the Tom Halbert that married Laura Salisbury.
