"The Wisdoms & Allied Families of Early Colonial Virginia
1.) Thomas (1) Wisdom, c 1630-1696, last of Petcoe Parish, Gloster Co., VA,
appears in the land & parish records as follows:
a.) Nugent, Vol. II, page 42: Mr. Thomas Miller, on 28 Oct 1665 granted
390 acres of land in Petsoe Parish, Glouster co., VA for the transport of 8
persons: Thomas Beale, Sr, Thomas Beale, Jr, Twice Alice Bale, Trice John
Pope, John Temple. The land lying on the South side of a swamp, dividing
the lands of Issak Richardson & John Day near Rappahannock Road, to Mr.
Richard Barnard, Thomas Vickers & a branch dividing this land from the land
of Thomas Wisdom.
b.) Nugent, Vol. II, page 21: Thomas Wisdom, on 10 April 1667 granted 127
acres of land in Glouster Co., VA for the transport of 3 persons: John
Reeve, Judith Knight, Mary Godfrey. The land lying on the North side of
Thomas Deacons Mill Swamp beginning at mouth of a branch dividing this land
from land of Thomas Miller & close to Mr. Vickers Line.
NOTE: The Thomas Miller land grant record shows that Thomas (1) Wisdom was
already seated on land in the Virginia Colony by year 1665, suggesting that
he arrived at an earlier date. It would seem that he probably immigrated
into Virginia by year 1658, in consideration of possible Indenture
obligations? ? ?

Xpr. Greenaway & Thomas Wisdom.
e.) Nugent, Vol, III, page 10: Mr. Thomas Miller on 29 Oct 1696 granted
660 acres of land in Petsoe Parish, Glouster Co., VA. The land lying on
the North side of a small branch of Poplar Springs Branch adjacent to Isaac
Richardson & Rappahannock Road. Land of John Buckner (dec), Barnard (dec),
& Thomas Vickers, a branch dividing this land & land belonging to Thomas
Wisdom (dec.). On John Easters old field & 300 acres of land granted him
(Miller) on 28 Oct 1665; 270 acres of land for transport of 6 persons:
John Cawnell, John worman, Phillip Thomas, William Sewall, James Batchley,
Francis Sipson.
f.) The book 'Petose Parish' by Chamberlayne states that Glouster Co., VA
can be traced back to year 1666. The Vestry records on page 65 are typ. of
that nacient era. Quote "Upon ye request of Tho. Hide to ye Vestry. They
have bound unto him a bastard child borne to Thomas Wisdom's servant
woman, named Edward Grabige, until he comes to ye age of 21 & he the said
hide to be allowed 500 lbs of Tobacco & cask for keeping ye said child next
yeare without any further charge to ye parish. June 14 1677 Thomas Wisdom
paid 50 lbs tobacco as Church tythe".
g.) Other records of Petsoe Parish, Glouster Co., VA - - quote "Order by
this present vestry that Mr. Thomas Buckner & Mr. William Miller dispose as
they seem convenient of ye 10 L {the L has a horizontal line through the
middle} left to ye poore of ye parish by Capt. John Smith (dec.): after the
poore people as followith have had their parts thereof Widow Davis, Rich.
Bradshaw, Widow Smith, Widow Wisdom, & Law. Patrick. If either of these
named have received of Mr. John Pritchett any part of 10 L {the L has a
horizontal line through the middle} soe (???) left to ye poore of ye parish
by Capt. Robert Thurston
(dec). Tis ordered that they dispose of Capt. Smiths to sume (some) other
of ye parish".
NOTE: Since Thomas (1) Wisdom seems to be the only adult Wisdom in Petsoe
Parish at the time of his death in 1696 leads one to conjecture that the
above Widow Wisdom may have been Thomas (1) Wisdom's Widow ? It is doubted
that the land of Thomas (1) Wisdom was part of the revised land grant of
Thomas Miller in 1696. It seems that Thomas (1)'s land was enherited by
his son, Francis Wisdom in 1696 & appears as a renewal of the grant in
Francis Wisdom name in year 1704 of which this Francis Wisdom paid a land
tax in 1704"
