25 March 1776, Fauquier County MB 1773-1780, p. 256; Thomas Whiting is appointed surveyor of the Road from Neavils Ordinary to the Road above the Glebe, and it is ordered that he with the tithes belonging to himself, Henry Fitzhugh, and William Fitzhugh do clear and keep the same in repair; the said tithes to be exempted from clearing any other road. In the Supplement to the Virginia Gazette of July 5, 1776, is printed the " Constitution, or Form of Government, agreed to and resolved by the Delegates and Representatives of the several counties and corporations of VIRGINIA: "Thomas Whiting, John Hutchings, Champion Travis, Thomas Newton, jun. and George Webb, esquires, Commissioners of Admiralty.". In the same Supplement appears the following advertisement: "The commissioners of the Navy Board will meet in the city of Williamsburg on Monday the 8th instant, to enter upon the necessary duties of their office. THOMAS WHITING. Virginia Historical Magazine

   First Wife: John Pryor married Anne Beverly Whiting, the daughter of Thomas Whiting and Ann Sewall. Anne was a socialite with dwindling fortunes. They married in 1796 when the Major was in his late forties, over-weight and in poor health and Anne was in her teens. The marriage dissolved when Anne ran off with her French tutor, Mr. Fremon. In 1811 Major Pryor asked the Virginia Legislature for a divorce, however there is no evidence that they ever granted a divorce, in fact there is strong paper evidence they said “no.”
