Jan., 1652; was a soldier for Hadley in the Fall fight; was one of the first permanent sett. of Deerfield, where he became prominent in mil. and civil affairs; comm. Ens. by Col. Pynchon, 5 July, 1686; and by Gov. Andros, 18 Feb., 1686-7; was first military commander, and until his dth., of Deerfield; but was one of Andros' opposers and rep. D. in the People's Leg., of 1689; his dth. 1691 was ment. by Col. Pynchon, Dec. 2d, as 'a sad form of God in this juncture of affairs.'"

    Thomas Wells, s. of Thomas, rem. abt. 1684 to Deerfield, and there d. 1691. He m. (1) Jan. 12, 1673, Hepzibah, dau. of Peter Buell of Windsor, Ct. She with three of her daughters was in June, 1693, knocked on the head and scalped by the Indians, but she and one dau. recovered from their injuries. She m. (2) Feb. 17, 1699, Daniel Belding. Children - Mary. b. Nov. 13. 1673; Sarah, b. 1676; Thomas, res. in Deerfield. m. March 29, 1700, Sarah Barnard, and d. s. p. 1750; Eleazar, a sailor, d. in Middletown. Ct., 1723; John, sent to Canada, 1706, slain May, 1709; Daniel; David; Hepzibah, m. John Dickinson.
