Thomas Waite was born in Dartmouth, Bristol County, MA. He married on 5 Jan 1710/11 in East Greenwich, Kent County, RI to Mary Tripp, born 22 August 1689 in East Greenwich, Kent County, RI.

Thomas was made Freeman on 2 May 1732 at East Greenwich RI. He resided at East Greenwich and Dartmouth MA. On 14 March 1714/5 Thomas and his wife mortgaged land there. In 1732, they were living in East Greenwich across the Narragansett Bay from Dartmouth. His property was located in that part of East Greenwich that was later set off as West Greenwich. Births of his children are recorded in both towns. On 26 September 1741, Thomas again conveyed land, this time in West Greenwich to his son Thomas Wait Jr. He returned to Dartmouth 31 December 1743 and he on that day conveyed to his son Thomas and names his residence as Dartmouth.
