Disputed Lineage

The book Gabriel Spruill of Carroll County, Georgia positions him as the son of John Spruill and Sarah Currell, who were known (from John's will) to have had a son Thomas, but Find A Grave claims he was their grandson, and the son of George Spruill and Nancy Donaldson. If he was born in 1793, the former is feasible, while if he was born in 1799, the latter is more likely.

    'Thomas Spruill, probably twelfth child of John Spruill was born in South Carolina in 1793. He was married ca. 1828 to Margaret Anne Bigby, ... They moved to Alabama where they lived in the Tabernacle Church area of Pickens County, Alabama. They also lived in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Thomas died 23 October 1860.'

    Note: There was a Thomas Spruill in Lowndes, Mississippi in 1866, but he was under the age of 20 (likely about 19, as he was the head of a household).

    His age appears to be 57 in this census, but someone has argued that his age was 51, which is consistent with his age in the 1860 census. Note that the ledger we see today is not the original census document (which has since been destroyed) and it is possible that the 57 was mis-transcribed from an original 51.

    The grave marker, which might or might not be the original, says (very legibly):
    'Thomas Spruill, A native of Abbeville Dist. S. C.
    For many years a citizen of Pickens Co. Ala
    Died Oct. 23, 1866 [sic], in the 68th year of his age.'

    This is clearly the Thomas Spruill mentioned in the book Gabriel Spruill of Carroll County, Georgia. However, Find A Grave says he was the son of George C Spruill and Nancy Agness Donaldson.

    Assuming he died in 1860 and not 1866, his age at death matches his age in the 1850 census. If he actually died in 1866, his birth year would be about 1799, matching his age in the 1860 census.
