    Justice Precinct #7, Suspervisor's District No. 10. Enumeration District
    #34, Sheet #13, and line #79. The Census reflects that he was 46 at the
    time the Census was taken and with him was his wife, Mary Francis, and
    their children: John, Sam, William, Spears, Marvin, Mary and Ben. His
    occupation was listed as farmer.
    Letters
    (1) January 5, 1915; John S. Spruell, Shelby Co., Vincent, Alabama writes
    to his Uncle, Thomas Newton Spruell in Hill Co., Abbot, Texas. He relates
    that he has a daughter, Mattie Spruell and a son-in-law, J. J. [Jim] Oaks
    living in Hill Co., Hubbard, Texas. John writes to his aunt, Mary
    Francis [Fannie] Martin Spruell that he and his brother, T. M. [Tom]
    Spruell would like to come and visit but times are hard for them. They
    operate a business called "Spruell Brothers Mfg," of long and short leaf
    pine lumber in Talladego Co., Harpersville, Alabama.

    writes to his father, Thomas Newton Spruell of Rural Route #4, Hill Co.,
    Abbot, Texas. Marvin is very concerned about his fathers health. I wish
    you would come down here and stay awhile and let Dr. Gaff treat you. He
    believes he can cure you. If you will come, I will send you the money to
    come on and come to Waco, Texas and meet you. You can't work. You might
    just as well be down here as up there. Sam and Ben can take care of


    things.
    [3] June 19, 1915; Delia Gregg Spruell of Rural Route #3, Box #56,
    Runnels Co., Ballinger, Texas writes to her Mother-in-law, Mary Francis
    Martin Spruell, of Rural Route #4, Hill Co., Abbot, Texas. She has heard
    that Mary Francis and Thomas Newton have been sick for a while. William
    has his oats out, but not his wheat and he is considering getting an
    independent threasher to come in. Dalia relates that she got Spears and
    Marvin's baby pictures. They sure are cute. You asked about Momma, She
    is real fleshy and has rheumatism till she can bearly do her housework
    after she was sick so long last fall.
    [4] November 15, 1918; He received a 'Western Union Telegram" from the
    Army notifying that his son, Private Benjamin W. Spruell, had been killed
    in action in Southern France.
    [5] December 6, 1918; He received a "Western Union Telegram" from the
    Army notifying that his son, Private Benjamin Spruell and not died, but
    was only wounded - had a broken ankle.
    [6] December 21, 1918; In a letter from his son, Ben, in the Army
    Infantry in Southern France, to his daughter, Mary Francis Spruell
    Kennedy. Ben states that he hoped Papa got over the flu.

    Fisher Co., Roby, Texas. W. N. Martin of Talledago Co., Trussville,


    Alabama asks Mary to write about her father, Thomas Newton Spruell and
    family.
    [8] June 26, 1931; In a letter to Mary Francis Spruell Kennedy in Fisher
    Co., Roby, Texas. Mary Lee Morrison Wheeler, Washington DC, relates that
    her grandfather, W. N. Martin of Talladago Co., Trussville, Alabama


    [Jefferson County] asked her to write to Mary as he isn't able to. He
    was sorry to hear of our fathers passing, Thomas Newton Spruell, of Hill
    Co., Abbot, Texas. It made him remember back fifty years when they were
    young men here in Alabama. Mary Morrison relates that all of his
    children are dead except his youngest daughter, Sibyl Martin Morrison.
    She is Mary Mary Lee's mother. Mary Lee Martin is married to Joe W.


    Wheeler, an archietect for the government and they live in Washington DC
    and have come back to Alabama to vacation. They have two sons, Joe, Jr.,
    five years and Tyler Lee two years old.
