Thomas Spire was born on 20th May 1704 at Ashton under Hill, which was then in Gloucestershire. He was the son of Sarah Spire, formerly Hughes, and her husband Thomas Spire, a weaver. Young Thomas was a twin, having a sister called Elizabeth. Sadly both twins died when less than a month old. Both were buried on 20th June 1704.
