Accordng to We Remember, People of Our Past, Vol XII, SI-thru-SQ, page 108S1: ...Thomas James, who was killed in battle during the Civil War, when he was in the command of Gen. Banks...

In an Internet search, I found that General Nathaniel P Banks was involved in the Red River Campaign shortly before James' reported date of death on May 21, 1864. Was James Smith involved in this campaign, and died from wounds in one of the final skirmishes?

See Handbook of Texas Online - Red River Campaign for details on this campaign.
