State of Ohio Pike County: On this 25th day of October 1819 Before me the Subscriber President Judge of the Eighth district of the court of Common Pleas for the State of Ohio personally appeared Thomas Sewell aged Sixty-Eight years now a resident in Pike County in the said district who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision may by the late act of Congress entitled an Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & Naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War – that the said Thomas Sewell enlisted in Botetourt County State of Virginia in the Company commanded by Captain William McKee (on the 5th day of August 1776) of the County of Rockbridge & State of Virginia in the 12th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel James Wood [indecipherably faint word] Shortly After transferred to Captain Andrew Wallace's Company of said 12th Regiment & that he continued in said Service in the said Regiment until a short time after Germantown [October 4, 1777] Battle when he by orders of Colonel John Nevels [probably John Neville] Lieutenant Colonel of said Regiment he was taken from the Ranks & appointed Q. M. Sergt. [Quarter Master Sergeant] under Ach. Foster [Achilles Foster] Q. M. [Quarter Master] for the 12th Regiment & served in this line as a regimental Staff officer & [indecipherable word] to be in the Muster Roll of Wallace's Company until the Valley Forge camp broke up again on the March to [indecipherable word] I was taken from this service by Order of General Scott to serve as a Clerk to John Knight's Company for the Virginia line [one or more indecipherable words] until discharged on the 5th of November 1778 in which time I was in Germantown & Monmouth [June 28, 1778] Battles although [indecipherable word] I went in a Platoon to Battle at [indecipherable word or words] place & that he is in Reduced Circumstances & stands in need of the Assistance of his country for Support & that he has no other Evidence now in his power of his said Service. I had and Honorable Discharged & a good Character from Colonel John Nevell & every Captain in the 12th Regiment which I sent down by Captain McKee to obtain Amount of the Depreciation of the Pay which was allowed to Soldiers I think Colonel Maryweather [Meriwether] was at the Head of that Department & those papers [were] never returned to me again my [indecipherable word] Claim was Disputed because I was not in the Muster Rolls after I was taken out of the Ranks but Captains Bowin [?] & Boyers [?] were Present at the time my Claim had like to have been Rejected & proved then that I had faithfully discharged my Duty in the different Stations in which I was placed. I know of those gentlemen living who can testify to my Services but my age & inability forbids me from traveling to them I will name them Colonel Henry Bowyers Clerk of the County & Superior Court in Botetourt who was our Adjutant this & brought me the Regimentals Orders to the Q. M. Sargt. Place Mr. Vincent Tapp now Clerk of the Mayor's Court in Stantown Virginia he was Sargeant Major at that time & Mr. James Brent of Botetourt he Enlisted with me & served in the same Company was discharged together he went home but I continued some time further in my clerkship I well right to those 3 men & obtain their Certificates of proof or as many of them as are yet alive 2 years ago they were all living. I was discharged at Robinson's Farm on Hudson's River State of New York. Sworn before me this 23rd day of October 1819 S/ Ezra Osborn, P J S/ Thomas Sewell
District of Ohio Pike County: On this 6th day of March 1822 personally appeared in open Court being a Court of Record for the County of Pike Thomas Sewell aged seventy years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the Acts of Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and the 1st May 1820 that he the said Thomas Sewell enlisted for the term of two years and four months on the 5th day of August in the year 1776 in the State of Virginia in the company commanded by Captain William McKee in the Regiment commanded by Colonel James Wood in the line of the State of Virginia on the Continental establishment, that he continued to serve in the said Corps until November 5th 1778 when he was discharged from the said service in __ in the State of New York. That he was in the Battles of Germantown & Monmouth Courthouse and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services. And in pursuance of the act of the first of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. I have no real property nor any family neither have I any mechanical trade. I am not able to labor, my eyes are dim and my hearing so dull that I am deprived of being able to teach children which was my last resort to procure a livelihood. [Facts in file: Elijah Sewell, administrator of the estate of the veteran gave testimony on March 2, 1860 in Fountain County, Indiana that Thomas Sewell died October 13, 1834 in Pike County Ohio; Elijah states in his affidavit that the veteran was not survived by a widow and that the only children are Elijah Sewell and Sarah Albright.]
