Facts and Events
Thomas Henry Sawyer was married to Frances Horr Lamar, daughter of Benoni Smith and Nancy Ann (Blincoe) on the 8th day of March, 1948 by James E. Stone, Minister of the Gospel of the United Baptist Church in Hancock County, Kentucky. Thomas Henry and Frances H. Sawyer lived in Louisville, KY for a short period , then moved to Cloverport, KY. They were living in Louisville, KY on the 5th day of March 1849 when Frances sold her one-sixth share of her father's estate to Jonathan and Nancy Sawyer. In 1849, during the California Gold Rush, Thomas Henry made the first of three trips to Califrnia. The first trip was overland. He returned to Kentucky in the Fall of 1850. However, he could not content himself to stay in Kentucky and decided to go back again. Thus in the Spring of 1851, in the company of Benjamin B. Lamar (brother of Frances Horr Sawyer) and George Bruner all of Hancock County, he made his second trip to California by water through New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Isthimus of Panama. Thomas Henry soon became homesick and returned to Kentucky in the fall of 181. After returning to Kentucky, Thomas Henry debated whether to settle in Kentucky or return with his wife to California. He finally chose to go back to California, hence a third trip to California was made overland in 1852. It took from May 9 to August 17 to make the last trip. During the trip in 1852, thomas Henry debated between going to California and Oregon. Frances H. Sawyer wrote in her diary on June 23rd, 1852, the following account of the trip: "We have concluded to go to California instead of Oregon, as was our first intention. I am greatly pleased, as my brother, Benjamin B. Lamar is there and to see him is a greater inducement for me than the whole of Oregon can offer." |
