Information from M. Tothill, ancestry.com submission. Thomas was son of James Sands (b. 1754) and Jane Hattersley (b. 1760) and became a J. P. and general merchant. He became a businessman in Liverpool and was a Weslayan preacher. His firm sent him to New York and when he came back he was 1843-1844 mayor of Liverpool. His residence in Lancashire was called Elmswood. Later he lived with his daughter Mary in Scotland and died 4apr1867 aged 76. He wa apparently buried in the Necropolis, Glasgow. Scottish archives have the will of Thomas Sands, merchant in Liverpool, thereafter in Glasgow, father of Susanna, Sarah Elizabeth, Thomas Branson and James Sydney Stopford Sands, residing in Granby Terr., Glasgow, died at Wamyss Bay. From Newton’s London Journal of Arts and Sciences: 1830 correspondence relating to improvements in spinning machines was sent to Thomas Sands, Liverpool. Gores Directory of Liverpool 1827 lists Thomas Sands, merchant, 9 Gt. Newton St. and Sands, Hodgson and Co. The latter firm was mentioned dealing in 1821 in “Cotton trade of Gt. Britain” (1968). Presumably Thomas was in the textile trade like his son in law James Black. Elmswood, in Briarwood Road, Mossley, Lancashire, was in 1847 the residence of Thomas Sands, Esq. In the yard of this firm was repaired, in 1847, the fine screw-steamer the "Sarah Sands," designed by Mr. Grantham, and named after the wife of the proprietor, Thomas Sands, Esq.
