Thomas Joseph Reddin and Anna Frances Koster were Married November 24, 1913 at Cascade, Iowa. They were married at 5 o'clock in the morning and left immediately for Kokomo, Indiana on their honeymoon. They had a close friend Anna Posting who was a Sister there in the Convent. On their return to Cascade they started housekeeping on the George Patterson Farm in Hazel Valley. I am not sure if they shared space with George Rice and wife or they lived there by themselves. Anna had worked in the Drug store and was a photographer. Anna left cards that she had purchased when she attended the Worlds Fair at St. Louis . She was also a very talented seamstress and well known for her fancy work and cooking. Anna once told Doris Reddin she won first prize for ironing a man's white shirt at the county fair. Tom was the Marshal of Cascade so it was easy to figure out how they became acquainted. They also shared many mutual friends and were a popular couple. They both were very stylish dressers. The first time Anna saw Tom, he was riding his horse. She said he was a proud man and a talented horseman. One of his favorite pastimes was breaking wild horses that were shipped in from out west. Anna Koster Reddin was born at Prairieburg, Iowa to Henry Koster and Frances Klinkner Koster. She had one sister Carrie Koster Miller. The family moved to Cascade when she was about 13 years old. She said she only spoke German and went to St. Mary's School. Her mother was a noted painter and took her training from Grant Wood in Anamosa , Iowa.

POPULAR YOUNG COUPLE JOINED IN HOLY WEDLOCK

KOSTER-REDDIN (Nov. 24, 1913)

The marriage of Miss Annie Koster and Mr. Thomas Reddin took place at St. Mary's Church at 6 o'clock Monday morning, Rev .J. B. Albers officiating. After the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents and shortly thereafter Mr. and Mrs. Reddin left on an eastern trip to Indiana and other places. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koster of East Cascade. She was Born and reared in Cascade and is a young woman of many worthy qualities, and is admired and respected by all of her acquaintances. Mr. Reddin is the efficient and popular city Marshal of Cascade, also born and raised here, and is a type of most honorable manhood. As an officer his capacity and ability is approved and sustained by his repeated reappointments by succeeding administrations. The Pioneer takes great pleasure, in common With their numerous friends, in offering hearty congratulations and best wishes for their future.

Before 1904 Tom worked as a butcher in a local meat market in Cascade. He was an excellent butcher and always did the butchering for the neighbors whenever he could. In 1904 when Tom was 23 years old he was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Dubuque, County, Iowa. May 1906 he was appointed Deputy Fish and Game Warden for Dubuque, Jones, Jackson and Delaware Counties. He was reappointed to the same position in 1907, 1909. Also the same year, 1909 he sent a card to his mother Mary that he was at Belle Fauche, South Dakota looking at land. In the same year his aunt Delia Kelly was in the hospital in Denver and Mary went to visit her, also a post card indicates Tom went to Denver around the same time. Not sure what was happening in their lives until Mary died in 1914. Tom and Anna must not have stayed long on the Patterson Farm as there is information from a niece of Anna's who was staying with them. "The night Mary died, I remember waking, and Annie and Tom were sitting on the bed and crying and Tom said, now I don't have anybody. Reginald Durkin and I had played hide and go seek that day and Mary would hide me under her apron. That night she went to church, I was in bed when she came home. Seems she was sick and Dr. Lane was called but Mary died sometime during the night. It was dark when I heard Annie and Tom talking. In later years when I was older and they lived on the farm Tom would let me drive the car. As an excuse to let me drive , he would send me to town to buy him some cigars They must have moved into Mary's home and Tom kept his job as Marshal until 1917 when they went into partnerships with Anna's father Henry Koster. Tom was offered a job with the Dubuque Police Department He knew someone by the name of Ryan who wanted to hire him, but he still wanted to try his hand at farming. Tom spent time at Kadoka, South Dakota, working in a butcher shop. George had sent word that a shop was for sale and he should come and check it out. There is no evidence he bought it. Tom did tell his son Charles that he stayed at the hotel in Kadoka. The winter was very sever, about 40 below zero. He decided for some exercise he would cut wood for the cook. Someone came out and stopped him and said he would frost his lungs. He also told about horseback riding through the Badlands on Sundays for something to do. He and a friend were invited to an Indian encampment for dinner. They were eating meat and the one friend said, "this is good what it is" and was told it was dog meat. His Dad said they were very careful what they ate after that. Charles Reddin was and excellent marksman with all types of guns. He said his father , Tom had taught him. When he was younger he also said his father would throw a half dollar into the air and put a hole in it. Tom's unexpected death had a devastating effect on Anna and son Charles. As on all farms they kept bulls in with their cow herds. Tom always walked out to bring in the cows and carried a club. When he didn't come in for supper, Charles went searching for him. He noticed the bull was off by himself and pawing the dirt. Just by instinct he had grabbed his rifle. He crossed the fence and saw the bull tossing his father into the air. He approached the bull and one shot to the head took him out. An ambulance was called but it was too late.

SEPT. 28, 1942 KILLED BY BULL

The Cascade community was intensely Shocked Monday evening when it Heard the startling details of the tragic Demise of Thomas Reddin, well known And highly respected farmer living two miles north of Cascade. Mr. Reddin was gored to death by a bull about six o'clock that evening. Mr. Reddin had previously gone into the pasture to drive the cattle in for the evening, it was stated. Upon his failure to return, his son Charles made a search and discovered his body in the pasture The infuriated animal had terribly mutilated the victim's body and luckily suspecting trouble, Charles carried his rifle along with him. The bull charged the young man when he appeared but a well-aimed bullet brought the beast to earth although it ploughed along over ten feet before death came. Tom Reddin was one of the fine characters of this community and it is with deep sadness and keen regret of the entire area that we are obligated to chronicle his tragic demise. A quiet unassuming man Tom possessed all the virtues which made him beloved to everyone who ever knew him. As a young man he enjoyed the company-Ionship of all and during his long career as City Marshall he enjoyed the profound respect and admiration of young and old alike. It was common knowledge that when Tom said "Go", you stepped along. He was always judicious in his actions but being a powerful man and fearless he could always back up his assertions without much opposition. The youngsters of the 'teen gangster age' are always the bane of a small town marshal's live but with Tom it was different. He played ball with 'the kids' but when the time for play was ended Tom's word was law, we stopped." And through the years every last youngster and oldster who knew Tom still loved him. It was truly said "He spoke softly and carried a big stick". He will be sadly missed around this area. Mr. Reddin was sixty-one years of age and was born, reared and attended school here, and was married to Miss Anna Koster in 1913. He was Marshall from 1905 to 1918. Mrs. Reddin and one son, Charles at home on the farm survive. Funeral services in charge of Gross Tilland Didisch were held from the farm home to St. Mary's Church, here at 9:30 o'clock This Thursday morning. Rev. Joseph Schemmel assistant pastor officiated at the mass of requiem and also at the graveside with internment at the Cascade Catholic Cemetery. Casket bearers were: Honorary, Ab Fay, M.F. Kurt, Alber Macomber, Ezra Martin, Geo Breitbach, Archie Macomber, A. F.Aitcheson, Jos. Mulady, F. X. Sauser, Frank Tallman, Nick Niers, Frank Baum, Louis Fangman, Jr., Wm. Aitchison , F. W. Loes, J. J. Bisenius, Eugene Cigrand, Ray Ball and P. A. Koob. Charles had made plans to join the Marine Corp but had to put it off until things were settled on the farm. His grandfather Henry Koster was part owner of the farm and didn't want to have a sale. Grandma Koster has died and Grandpa was now living with them on the farm. He had a small home in town and Anna wanted to move into town with her father and either sell the farm or let son, Charles run the operation. But the grandfather had sold the home in town and not told anyone.

After things settle down and by this time Charles and Doris were married, the bank wanted them to sell. When it was checked out we found the bank had made several loans to the Grandfather, who only had a third interest in the farm. He never made an effort to pay them back but he and his wife had taken several trips. Each time he would borrow on the farm. The bank tapped into Anna's share also. We should have hired a lawyer but my husband just wanted to get out from under the whole mess, he never cared for farming. In the meantime our first son Thomas was born and that night Grandpa Koster fell in the barn and broke his hip. He died weeks later in the hospital. Everything was sold and Grandma moved to Cascade into and apartment. Charles had several jobs and then worked for John Deere for 30 years. Anna worked in a restaurant for several years and then kept house for different people. By this time we had moved to Dubuque and she came to live with us. We had a house full of teenagers and not much room. She moved to a nursing home and passed away at the hospital from congestive heart failure. If I had it to do over she would never have lived in a nursing home.
