Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, was the son of a shipmaster, Captain Benjamin Raffles. Raffles' first wife was Olivia Mariamne nee Devenis. She bore him no children. After her death, he remarried. Of the five children from his marriage to Sophia Hull, Ella Sophia alone survived infancy.
