Facts and Events
"Thomas Merwin (WalterA, NicholasB, ThomasC, JohnD) [eldest son, baptism not found] was born say 1620, probably at Clewer, Berkshire, and he was buried at New Windsor, Berkshire, as "Mr. Thomas Murwin, senior," 16 October 1683. He married, first, say 1647, Elizabeth -----, who was buried at New Windsor 3 July 1653. He married there, second, 16 April 1655, Mary Burroughs of Yateley, Hampshire, who was buried at New Windsor 12 February 1661/2. He married, third, at St George's Chapel (at Windsor Castle), New Windsor, 18 February 1663/4, Katherine Browne, "by virtue of a license from the Dean of the Chapel." She was buried at New Windsor, as "Cathern Murwin," 13 November 1685. Thomas was a grocer at New Windsor. In 1657 he paid 6s 8d for a lease of the Market House, where he probably afterwards resided. In 1662, he witnessed a quitclaim from John Leaver and William Russell to the Deans and Canons of Windsor Chapel of a messuage or tenement house in Old Windsor called Seymer's lands which Leaver and Russell had by "late usurped power and authority." On 19 January 1671/2, Thomas Merwin paid a £4 fine to have his two leases held from the town increased to forty year terms commencing from the previous Michaelmas [i.e., 29 September]. Thomas had a long and useful career as a public servant. In January 1656/7, he was mentioned as a Brother [burgess] of New Windsor. He was bailiff there from Michaelmas 1660 to 1661, and was admitted Bencher by the Commissioners, July 1662. He was Alderman in September 1662, Chamberlain of the Poor, 1666, and Mayor, Michaelmas 1669 to 1670. In 1671 and 1672 he was Chamberlain, and Mayor again from Michaelmas 1681 to 1682. From Michaelmas 1682 to 1683, he was Justice of the Peace."[1] References
