Notes
- 1775 - commissioned Captain in the Sixth Virginia Regiment after recruiting a company of soldiers from New Kent County
- 1775 to 1781 - saw continuous service with the Continental Army and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown while serving as an aide to Gen. Thomas Nelson
- was a charter member of the Society of the Cincinnati, established by officers to perpetuate friendship and raise funds for widows and orphans of men who had fallen in battle
- after the war he moved with his family from Millwood in Frederick (now Clarke) County to Nelson County
- although he was given land around Covington, VA, he had come to Nelson (then Amherst) County as the administrator of his stepfather-in-law's estate and had been so taken with the wild and fertile land that he bought 9,000 acres from Colonel Rose who owned vast tracts of land in the county
- 1807 - became one of the first magistrates of Nelson County when it was founded
- built Level Green, his home in Nelson County, and lived there until his death in 1834
- abt 1814 - built Pharsalia, a home for his son William and his bride
