Thomas Lowe's origins have yet to be established. The age quoted when he died suggests he was born around 1738. Thomas's first confirmed sighting is on 21st April 1763, when he married Mary Ingram at Grantham in Lincolnshire. Thomas and Mary went on to have seven children baptised at Grantham between 1764 and 1777, although the youngest died when only two years old. Some of the children's baptisms note that the family lived at Manthorpe, a hamlet to the north of the town, whilst one of the children's baptisms records that Thomas worked as a miller. In 1774 Thomas's wife's uncle, John Ingram, died. He was also a miller at Manthorpe and owned land there and at nearby Great Gonerby and Londonthorpe. He left money and land in his will for Thomas's children. Mary died in 1792, aged 53. Thomas survived her by thirteen years. He was buried at Great Gonerby on 26th May 1805, although he had been living at Harrowby in the parish of Grantham immediately before his death. He was said to be 66 years old. References
