Gail has that he drove a Peddler's Wagon for a few years in eastern PA and western NJ. About 1833 went out to Salem, Ohio, where he took an apprenticeship as a plasterer.

Lived in Yellow Creek and Wellsville, in Colombina County, Ohio, where he had a plastering business.

From his obituary: When a young man he was of delicate constitution, and for the sake of outdoor exercise, as well as for a livelihood, he drove, for some years a peddling wagon in various parts of eastern Pennsylvania and new Jersey. Afterwards he began an apprenticeship at the trade of plastering, which he completed at Salem, this county, whither he came in the year 1833, and where he worked for two years. Then he came to the old tavern stand at the forks of the Georgetown and New Lisbon road, and engaged in the hotel business. He kept this house about seven or eight years in all, at three different eriods, the intervals being spent in Wellsvile, he coming here first about the year 1836, when he and Brinton Entriken bought out Wm. Bleakley, and kept the old American House, which stood on the present site of the Commercial House. Something over thirty years ago he settled down to follow his trade of plastering, and for over twenty years took almost every contract in his line that was given out in Wellsville. His last contract of any magnitude was that of the Presbyterian church, in 1869-70, during the prosecution of which he fell from a scaffold and sustained injuries from the effects of which he never fully recovered, and which unfitted him for active business in after life.

  Mr. Leonard's parents were Quakers, and he was bred in their good old way, and indoctrinated in their belief, and up to the time of his death held to the faith of his fathers.  He was a good citizen and unswevingly just and upright in all his dealings.

"History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" has that he was a trade plasterer and went to Colombiana County in 1832.
