Thomas Leighton was the youngest child of Thomas and Mary Leighton and born in Trenton, Wayne, Michigan. Mary Leighton likely died as a result of childbirth immediately thereafter and Thomas Leighton the elder remarried in 1854 per local church registry. Brother John and Thomas both appear in the 1850 census for Trenton, Michigan with probable neighbors in the absence of their father Thomas as 'John Lightning' age 12 and 'Thomas Lightning' age 0 respectively. John resided with the family of Francis Butler, domicile 90 and Thomas with the family of Alvah Bovee, domicile 101, both locations within two blocks of the other in downtown Trenton, Michigan. From the Bovee family Thomas took the the middle name "Alva" in likely honor of Bovee family infant son Alva O. Bovee, who died in 1851 and by derivation family patriarch Alvah C. Bovee who died in 1854.
