The only records that have yet been found that refer to Thomas Lamkyn are the records for his children baptised in Bletchingley, Surrey:

  • Katherine bap. 16 Jun 1560, bur. 5 Jul 1560
  • Elisabeth bap. 13 Jun 1561. She married Thomas Greenwood in Bletchingley in 1590 and had at least 4 children, 2 of whom are known to have survived to adulthood
  • Rychard bap. 8 Oct 1563. A record for a Richard Lamkyne buried 11 Oct 1563 in Bletchingley probably refers to this Rychard, however another Rychard Lamkin (possibly a brother to Thomas) lived in Bletchingley at the same time: Rychard Lamkin married Clemence Borowe in Bletchingley on 24 Jan 1561. No children have yet been found for this marriage so it's possible the elder Rychard died shortly after marrying.
  • Ame bap. 1 Nov 1564 and buried the same month
  • Herry bap. 25 Nov 1565. No further record has been found for Herry.

Thomas' wife was named on the baptism records of Elisabeth and Rychard as Elizabeth. It is assumed she is the mother of the other children. No other record has been found for Thomas or Elizabeth.

Bletchingley was predominantly a small farming village since the early middle ages. The earliest parts of St. Mary the Virgin's Church date to the 11th century.

Thomas Lamkyn was likely born during the reign of Henry VIII. He lived through the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I and the tumultuous religious events of that time - in the nearby town of East Grinstead three martyrs were burned on 18 July 1556 during the reign of Mary I.
