Thomas Kempson was born in 1839 in Bedfordshire, son of Celia Kempson, formerly Jones, and her husband George Kempson, a straw dealer. The family lived in the village of Totternhoe, which may well have been where Thomas was born.

Thomas died when he was just over a year old, being buried at Totternhoe on 14th January 1841.
