DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our Various Correspondents.) NEW LAMBTON. DEATH OF Mr. T. GRAY. Mr. Thomas Gray, an old and respected resident of this locality, died at his residence, Regent-street, on Friday, after an illness of three weeks' duration. The deceased, who was 74 years of age, was born In the County of Durham, England. He was a miner, and first commenced work in the mines in England at the early age of seven years. He arrived in this State in 1864, and worked for two years in the old Borehole pit. With his wife and family he subsequently removed to New Lambton, then known as The Huts, where he has resided for the past 30 years. He obtained employment at the Lambton Colliery, and during the term of his service held the position of deputy and overman. Falling health caused him to retire from active work about twelve months ago. When Messrs. Seymour and Brown, the former being acting manager for the Lambton Company, were suffocated in the Mosquito pit in 1878 the late Mr. Gray was the first man that went down the shaft, and assisted in bringing the bodies to the surface. The company, in recognition of his bravery, presented him with a watch and chain, suitably inscribed. In mining matters he always took a keen interest, and in the early days was closely identified with the affairs of the miners' union. He was also an admirer of all kinds of sport, and will be remembered as an enthusiast in the palmy days of Lambton as a prominent member connected with the old sports clubs. His family consists of five sons and six daughters, all of whom are well known residents of the district. Mr. Michael Gray. the eldest son, being the present Mayor of the borough. There are also 29 grandchildren connected with the family. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place yesterday afternoon, the pall-bearers being Messrs. Fairhurst, Bedford, Hincks, and Jeffries. The cortege proceeded to the general cemetery by way of Adamstown station, the interment taking place in the Methodist section. The Rev. W. Stewart conducted a short service at the house, and also at the grave. Mrs. Gray and family have been the recipients of general sympathy in their bereavement.
