The Gray family settled in the poor Irish tenement district in Brooklyn. They were a broken family, living at 362 Hicks Street between Pacific & Amity Streets. The block was dubbed the "Oceanic" houses and was well known for its squalor and misery. Bridget Gray worked as a nurse at the Long Island College Hospital in 1887 where she met Joseph Nolan, an educated Irish engineer.
