Born at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to John Gibson and Martha Parks, married Martha Hogg. After Martha died, his second youngest daughters husband, Thomas Smith Allen died at 45 years of age so Thomas moved in with them to help run their farm until the boys got older. Very educated man, active in Presbyterian Church and the Seceder Church, branch that left mainstream Presbyterian, lived for a short time in Xenia, Ohio then moved to Blount County, Tennessee before moving into Warren County, Ohio. When preachers were not available he filled in teaching because of his vast knowledge and understanding of the Bible. While a young man he stayed with an uncle in Philadelphia learning the craft of masonry. He and his son in law, Mr.John Kendall, built the first stone Sugar Tree Grove Presbyterian Church in Hale Township, Warren, County, Illinois. Prior to coming to Hale Twp in 1831 they lived and farmed near Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. John Kendall married Elizabeth Gibson who was a sister of Jane Gibson Allen, wife of Thomas Smith Allen and was another of Thomas Gibsons' daughter's.
