Thomas Fanning
BIRTH 1759
North Carolina, USA [likely Virginia]
DEATH unknown
Knox County, Tennessee, USA
Eldest son of John Fanning Sr. of Orange/Gilford/Randolph Cos., NC and Montgomery/Grayson/Carroll Cos., VA. His wife was Ann Howard per her mother, Jane Howard Allen's will (widow of Abraham Howard). He is in the 1779 Randolph Co., NC, Tax List along with his father, John Sr and both are on the roster of the Flower Swift Militia unit of the Upper New River Valley of VA in 1782/83. Also, both are on the early Montgomery Co., VA, tax lists in the 1780's. Thomas shows on the 1790 Surry Co., NC, census with 1 male above age 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females and the 1800 Surry Co., NC, tax list. Son Thomas Jr's tombstone states he was born 7/9/1800, and the 1850 and 1860 censuses give his birth as NC. No info has been found on this family from Jane Allen's will of 1805 until the marriage of daughter Anna Fanning (c1791/1794 NC/1862 Green Co., MO) to Thomas Swadley on 7/30/1817, Knox Co., TN. Per records it appears that Thomas and Ann had at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. Known children - Anna, John and Thomas - all born in the 1790's, apparently in Surry Co., NC. In NC, John Sr. was closely associated with Peter Youngblood and per DNA of some Fanning descendants, there were intermarriages with the Youngbloods, 2 known marriages and 2 more suspected marriages. Elizabeth Lipps was NOT Thomas' mother.
