James Alexander was shot with a "pistol" on August 30, 1865. He died September 2, 1865.
The murderer was Thomas ENGART who, although jailed and supposedly brought to trial, may never have been convicted. He is found in Washington Co., VA with his daughter, Jane, and her family in 1880. Thomas' wife, Rebecca, remained in Botetourt Co.
The dispute was over a cornfield on the land of John WILSON. The courts did determine that Rebecca ENGART was "entitled to all of the crop" and was to receive $14.50 from the estate of James Alexander.
