1. Thomas 1 Downes, a shoemaker, was born February 2, 1611/12 and died January 21, 1698/9, under which date Pike says in his Diary: "Thomas Downes, senior, died after one months sickness, wanting only twelve days of eighty-seven years old." Thomas was of Boston 1652 where he witnessed the will of George Burden. The town of Dover granted him land at Cochecho in 1656 and he was taxed there in 1657. In 1675 he bought ten acres of the town and he was one of the petitioners to remain a part of Massachusetts in 1677. In 1670, Thomas sold Jediah Andrews of Salisbury "my late dwelling house and lot" on east side of the neck, bounded east by Fore river, south by Mr. Rayner's land, north and west by the common. In 1687 he sold Thomas Hanson fifty acres granted by the town in 1656 at Cochecho near Mr. Rayner's. Thomas was constable in 1666.
His wife was Katharine who died December 23, 1702, under which date Pike says: "Old sister Downs died with illness, age and suffering."

THOMAS1 Downes, housewright, b. 1612, Boston and Dover. (T. D., shoemaker, was adm. inhab. of Hampton 25 Nov. 1654.) Gr. land at Cochecho in 1656, the next yr. he was up for water travel on Sunday, and for hims. and his man Christopher working on Sunday. Const. 1666. Lists 356abcefghk, 357d, 339b, 311c (Dover), 52, 54, 92, 94, 96. He d. 21 Jan. 1698-9, sick one month, lacking 12 days of 87. W. Catherine d. 23 Dec. 1702. List 96. An heirship deed in 1734 included 6 Downes and 2 Cooks.

- DOWNS. - Thomas1 Downs came in the Defence to Boston, Mass., in 1635 ; had grant of land in Dover, N.H., in 1656, and was thenceforth taxed at Cochecho, and died there, 21 January 1698-9. Pike says, that date, "Tho: Downs, senr died after one moneths sickness, wanting only 12 days of 87 years old." He had wife Catherine in Boston ; whether this was his only wife, is not known, but it is probably. Pike says, 23 December 1702, "Old sister Downs died with Illness, age & suffering."
