Thomas1 Derby, Darby, or Daby, in 1684 removed from Concord, Mass., to Stow, Mass., with his wife Mary. Stow was incorporated May 16, 1683, at which time "12 foundation lots," each containing 50 acres of upland and 15 of meadow, were granted to the first settlers in the following order: Rev. Boaz Brown, Gershom Heald, John Butterick, Ephraim Hildreth, Thomas Stevens, Stephen Hall, Samuel Buttrick, Joseph Freeman, Joseph Darby, Thomas Gates, and Shadrack Hapgood. Other lots were afterwards granted, including one to Thomas Darby on June 17, 1684. Thomas and Joseph Darby, or Daby, as their names were often written, were from Concord ( Shattuck's History of Concord, pages 44-45). Thomas Daby was a Narragansett soldier under Capt. Joseph Sill in King Philip's War, 1676; and may have been the Thomas Daby who joined the First Church of Salem, Mass., October 6, 1683. Thomas Daby of Stow was elected in 1706, a deacon of the Stow Church, which was organized in 1706. He died before December 29, 1749. His wife Mary died January 4, 1727 at Stow.
