Thomas Cunnington's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died is correct, then he was born around 1759. His first confirmed sighting is on 18th May 1797, when he married Ann Mason at Exton in Rutland.

Thomas and Ann went on to have eight children baptised at Exton between 1797 and 1814. The baptism of their youngest child records that Thomas was an under keeper, presumably working at Exton Hall, seat of the Earls of Gainsborough.

Thomas was buried on 16th May 1816 at Exton. He was said to be 56 years old. Ann survived him by nearly fifteen years.
