Thomas Cox was born on 3rd January 1867 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, son of Elizabeth Cox, formerly Ward, and her husband Thomas Cox, a wheelwright. Young Thomas appears in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Barnack. In 1881 he was described as a butcher's boy.
In 1884, when Thomas was seventeen years old, his father died.
On 8th October 1889, aged 22, Thomas married Kate Crowson, who was from the nearby village of Ufford. They married at Barnack and lived there for a time after their marriage, having their first daughter there in 1890, and appearing there in the 1891 census living in a three roomed cottage on Main Street.
By 1893 they had moved to the Walcot Hall estate at Southorpe, between Barnack and Ufford. Thomas worked as a gardener for the estate and the family lived in a house on the estate. They went on to have another seven children there between 1893 and 1910. Back in Barnack, Thomas's mother died in 1906. By 1911 Thomas was described as head gardener at Walcot Hall.
Kate died at Walcot on 28th August 1915, aged 46. In 1917, Thomas's son Harold was killed in action in the First World War.
By 1918, Thomas had left Walcot and moved about sixty miles north to Hainton in Lincolnshire, taking up the post of head gardener at Hainton Hall for Lord Heneage. He married again in 1918 to Agnes Margaret Selvage, who had been working as a teacher at the village school in Hainton.
Shortly after Thomas's second marriage, another of his sons, Arthur, was also killed in action, just two months before the Armistice ending the First World War.
Thomas served as head gardener at Hainton Hall for twenty years, until retiring in the late 1930s, when he and Agnes moved to the nearby village of Sixhills, living at the Old Vicarage there. They appear there at the outbreak of the Second World War, both described as retired. Agnes's sister Fanny was also living with them.
Thomas died on 19th June 1949, aged 82. Agnes survived him by twelve years.
