Agnes Margaret Selvage was born on 14th December 1869 at Peterborough in Northamptonshire, daughter of Susan Selvage, formerly Cater, and her husband Joseph Selvage, a cemetery curator. Agnes appears in the 1871 census living at Cemetery Lodge in Peterborough with her parents and siblings.
By 1881 Agnes was living with her sister Fanny at South Willingham in Lincolnshire, over sixty miles north of Peterborough. Fanny was working as a pupil teacher at the village school there.
Agnes also went into teaching, being described as an assistant school teacher by 1891. On census night that year she was visiting a couple in Worthing on the Sussex coast.
The 1901 and 1911 censuses both find Agnes living with her sister Anne Georgiana and their mother at Hainton in Lincolnshire, immediately north of South Willingham where Agnes had lived before. They lived in the school house, with Anne being the head teacher and Agnes an assistant teacher. A niece, Florence Rampton, was also living with them in 1911.
In 1918, aged 48, Agnes married a gardener called Thomas Cox. He was a widower, whose first wife had died in 1915. He had recently moved to Hainton to be head gardener for Lord Heneage at Hainton Hall. Thomas held that post for twenty years until retiring in the late 1930s, when he and Agnes moved to the nearby village of Sixhills, living at the Old Vicarage there. They appear there at the outbreak of the Second World War, both described as retired. Agnes's sister Fanny was also living with them.
Thomas died in 1949, aged 82.
Agnes later left the Old Vicarage at Sixhills. She survived Thomas by twelve years. She died on 27th December 1961, a few days after her 92nd birthday, at Tor-o-Moor, a nursing home in the town of Woodhall Spa. Her niece Florence Rampton was one of her executors.
