Thomas Cornell's name is given an alternate spelling, "Tammus Cornel" in Richard Wilson Cook's book, "Hendrick Martenszen van Copenhagen". Mr. Cook also gives several variations to the name "Cornel".Tammus (Thomas) Cornell (believed to been born in New York about 1699/1700) was of Jamaica, Long Island, New York, when he married A. Wiltse. The family moved to Beekman, Duchess Co. He and Richard Cornell, no known relation, were vestrymen in the Poughskeepsie Church before leaving to found Christ Church in Beekman. Glaizer, 1975.Thomas and Annetje and their family came to Beekman where he was taxed from 1753 (at £6) to 1754 and then estate to 1757, no estate to 1778. His mark, granted in 1753, was a crop on left ear and a 1/2 penny in under side of same & 1/2 penny in upper side of right ear. Their children were all baptized in Jamaica. Settlers of Beekman Patent, Chapter 57: The Cornell Families.Thomas Cornell lived in lot 1 of the Poughquag Purchase on a 270 acre farm on present day State Route 216 near Green Haven Prison. Settlers of Beekman Patent, Chapter 57: The Cornell Families.Update (2/20/2008):Recent DNA results show no genetic markers are shared by the descendants of this Thomas Cornell and the descendants of the English Cornell families described in the 1902 Cornell Genealogy. DNA results suggest that Thomas was of Dutch, German, or North Scottish descent. This evidence lays to rest the mythological connection of this line to the Beekman/Hempstead Cornell families through a Mary Hukes or Lukes. FTDNA Kit #111614, Haplogroup R1b1, February 2008.
