Thomas Cole's family owned a large tract of land where the city of Petersburg is now located. Because the land was poor, peanut land, the majority of the family moved west. Sciota Valley, Ohio. Some descendants still live in this area.

Thomas and his wife Jane lived on a farm at Lego. Stoco High School was built on this site during the time that Lacey Cole, the grandson of Thomas, was Supertintendent of Schools.

The Raleigh county census of l870 records the ages and names of Thomas Cole's family. Thomas is buried in the Crew's Cemetary, Nimitz, Wv. Jane is buried near Mead, Wv.

Thomas is the great grandfather of William Lee.
