Thomas Casteel was a Private in Company D, 3rd Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade (PHB) Maryland Volunteers, after initially joining Company E. He enrolled on May 1, 1862 at Oakland, MD for a total period of three years. Regimental Hospital records note that he was admitted 3/28/1863 with Rubeola (Big Measles). He also claimed he contracted mumps "affecting his testicles." The prior year, in December 1862, he was treated for Scabies at Barracks Green Hospital of Annapolis, Maryland. He mustered out in Baltimore 2/29/1865. Following the war, he married his first cousin, Susan Elizabeth Casteel. After his death in 1/24/1906, his widow Susan attempted to apply for a widow's pension, since she claimed he died of chronic diarrhea due to illness acquired during his service in the Civil War. On this form, Thomas was listed as 5 foot 5 inches tall, with light complexion, grey eyes, and light-colored hair.
