Thomas casteel was one of the pioneer settlers of what is now Garrett County, MD. He was born in Prince George's County, MD, and settled first in Valley Township, Bedford County, PA, where he and his brother, Archibald, served in Captain Evan Cessna's company of Bedford militia during the Revolutionary War. In the 1790 Census of PA, he was listed as head of a family of five in Bedford County. Prior to 1798, he migrated to Maryland and resided for a time on part of the "Blooming Rose" tract of land near the Friend settlement, now the Thomas Fike farm. In 1814, Nathaniel Wallace deeded him 73 1/2 acres of "Black Oak Ridge" and 39 3/3 acres of "Narrow Escape" for the price of $100. This became the Casteel home, near the James McMullen settlement, about two miles southwest from Friendsville, MD. On the Assessment roll of 1798, he was assessed with 2 horses, 9 cattle valued at 54 pounds, 15 shillings in Sandy Creek Hundred, as head of a family of ten. He and his wife are likely buried in the old Hall Graveyard on "Blooming Rose."
