THOMAS E. CAREY (1863-1942)

When a small boy, he was brought by his parents to Wisconsin, the family settling at Oakfield, Fond Du Lac County. His boyhood was spent in that area, and he attended school there. Then the family emigrated to Ellsworth, Nobles County, Minnesota in 1879. The trip was made by covered wagon. After his marriage, he and Mame moved to Denver on August 28, 1919.

My maternal grandfather was a tall, thin man with a full head of snowy-white hair. When I was about six, mother and I spent 7 months living with the grandparents while my dad was stationed in South Carolina. Grandpa was my pal, taking me to the park, to the movies, and on Easter Sunday, giving me three live baby chicks in a pink basket. He was wonderful about giving Penny, my cocker spaniel, the run of the house. As a result, the baby chicks were given to the egg man.

Our family spent many happy vacations at 1406 Monroe Street with Grandma and Grandpa.

The April 1910 Census for Ellsworth, Nobles, MN page 189 shows Thomas and Mame married for 6 years and living on Walnut Street with their daughter, Madeline age 3. They moved within a few months, and Eugene was born in August in LeMars ,IA. It was about sixty miles south, and there was a straight railroad connection.

Madeline related that her father at one time gave up farming and ran a shoe shop. She also recalls her Carey uncles - John and Pat - visiting her, and that they were much younger than her father. The Carey family had ownership of a farm and tenant farmers eventually ran it. Sometime after Mame Carey's death in 1965, the tenant farmers purchased the farm. Some - or all of - the proceeds were distributed to Madeline and Eugene.
