Thomas was the son of Benjamin Canby of Thorne, Yorkshire, England. His mother was probably a sister of Henry Baker/Boaker. Her first name was either Elizabeth or Mary.

Thomas immigrated on the ship 'Vine' to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1684 as an indentured apprentice to his uncle, Henry Baker/Boaker.

He was baptised as an Anglican, but before leaving England he became a Quaker under the influence of his uncle, a Friends' Minister.

He married Sarah Jervis in 1693 in Abington Monthly Meeting, Abington, Bucks Co. They had nine children: Benjamin in 1694 (died in 1695), Sarah in 1695, Elizabeth in 1696, Mary in 1697, Phebe in 1699, Esther in 1701, Thomas in 1702, Benjamin in 1704 and Martha in 1705.

Thomas was married twice more. His second wife was Mary Oliver, with whom he had an additional eight children: Jane in 1710, Rebecca in 1711, Hannah in 1717, Joseph in 1715, Rachel in 1716, Oliver in 1718, Ann in 1719 and Lydia in 1720.

His third wife was the widow Jane (Doyn) Preston, whom he wed on Oct. 9, 1722 (9th day of 8th month). Interestingly, two of her daughters from her first marriage then married two of Thomas' sons from his first marriage.

Thomas was a grist mill owner near what became the village of New Hope, Bucks Co. He was a justice in the Bucks Co. courts and a member of the Colonial Provincial Assembly.

He passed away on the 20th day of the 9th month, 1742.
