Two Comrades Gone.
Comrades of the M. D. Manson Post, G.A.R., No. 385, at Shoals, are called upon to mourn the loss of Thos. Butler, one of the pioneers of Martin County.
He was a Minister of the Gospel in the U.B. Church for more than fifty years.
On two occasions, he was nominated for the Legislature by the Republican Party, but owing to the large majority against him, he was not elected, although he ran ahead of his party ticket.
He was an honest man, universally respected by his neighbors and acquaintances.
He enlisted as a Private in Co. A., 52d Regiment, Ind. Vols., on the 14th day of August, 1862, and was discharged as a Corporal in 1863, on account of old age. He was mustered into the Post on the 2d day of July, 1837. He delivered many patriotic addresses for the Post.
Died in Lost River Township in March, 1896, and was buried by the Post near his old home. The large funeral showed the esteem in which he was held.

Thomas Butler, born March 22, 1805, was the son of John and Mary Butler in the state of Ohio. Siblings were: Cynthia (Aug 11, 1793), John (Aug. 4, 1795, Hannah, (Aug. 4, 1797), William (Mar. 1, 1799), Nancy (Aug. 1801), Jane (Aug. 1803), Robert (Jan. 26, 1808).
