- ↑ The identification of Thomas Brees, the husband of Mary Lewis and Mary Powell with Thomas Brees, the son of Thomas Brees and Ann Lloyd, is somewhat uncertain. Two other Thomas Breeses “of Llandinam” were married in the same time period: one to Margaret Williams in 1772, and one to Mary Savage in 1788. The husband of Margaret Williams is described as “of Carnedd” in the baptism record of his first child. This makes it very likely he is the Thomas Brees mentioned in the 1772 will of Samuel Brees of Carnedd. The husband of Mary Savage moved to Bettws Cedewain (his wife is named in the baptism records of some of his children.) The age given in his burial record puts his birth in the late 1760s, ruling him out as the son of Thomas Brees and Ann Lloyd. (He was likely the grandson of the Samuel Brees of Carnedd mentioned above.) That would seem to make it likely that the husband of Mary Lewis and Mary Powell was the son of Thomas Brees and Ann Lloyd, as the last remaining Thomas Brees of Llandinam of the right age. However, some doubt is raised by the burial of a Thomas Brees of Finnant, servant, in Trefeglwys in 1778. As well, a Thomas Brees was baptized in Llanidloes in 1749 to parents who had been married in Trefeglwys and had an earlier child baptized in Llandinam. One hopes that uncovering further evidence will clear up this doubt. There is some slight occupational evidence in favour of the identification on this page: the elder sister of this Thomas Brees, Anne Brees, married a blacksmith. (The elder brother, Andrew, was probably a miller.) Perhaps stronger evidence is that named in the probate bond along with his widow is Andrew Davies, the brother-in-law of the Thomas Brees born in 1754.
