- Pension Application of Thomas Blakemore BLWt591-100
I do hereby certify that Thomas Blakemore inlisted as a soldier for during the War on the first day of Jan’y. in the year 1777 in Capt. Morgan Alexanders comp’y. (afterwards commanded by Capt’n. Marquis Calmes) in the 2 . Virginia Regiment on continental establishment, d and that I was in the action with him at Germantown on the 4th day of October in the year 1777 and at that time and place I heard a muskett ball strike him in the body which caused him the s’d. Thomas to fall instantly on the spot; and have not seen or heard of him since – and have before and ever since lived in the neighbourhood to which he belonged Given under my hand and seal at Cedar Grove this 26th day of Dec’r. in the year 1811 — Geo. Blakemore [George Blakemore, pension application S6665] Late Lt. 2d. Virg’a. Reg’t. R. War Frederick County to wit This day George Blackmore late a corporal in Capt’n. Morgan Alexander’s Comp’y (which was afterwards commanded by Capt’n Marquis Calmes) in the 2d Virg’a Reg’t on continental establishment, personally appear’d before me a justice of the peace for said County & made oath on the holy evangelists of Almighty God; That Thomas Blackmore late of this County, did to the best of his recollection, enlist as a soldier during the war on or about the 1st day of Jan’y in the year 1777 in aforesaid Comp’y in the said Regiment, that he the said George Blackmore did see the said Thomas Blackmore slain by the enemy, when a soldier in service of the United States on the 4th day of Oct. in year 1777 at the battle of German Town between the British army & that of the Untied States. At the same time George Smith a soldier in the said comp’y & the same Regim’t personally appeared before me, & made oath on the holy Evangelists of Almighty God that the above nam’d Thomas Blackmore, of the County aforesaid, as he believes & was told by the said Thomas did enlist as a soldier during the war about the 1st of Jan’y in the year 1777 in the above namd Comp’y & Regiment & that has good reason to believe & does verily believe, that the said Thomas Blackmore was slain by the enemy whilst in the service of the United States at the Battle of Germantown on the 4th day of Oct’r in the year 1777 between the army of the United States & that of Great Britain Given under my hand & Seal this 30th day of April 1812. NOTE: On 20 March 1812 George Blakemore proved that he was the heir of Thomas Blakemore. [George was the older brother of Thomas Blakemore].
