Thomas Archer's origins are unknown. His first sighting is on 20th October 1753, when he married a woman named Martha Venables at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire. The couple had three daughters baptised at St Paul's Walden between 1755 and 1761, but the first two both died as babies.

Thomas appears to have died in 1782, when he was described as a carpenter of Church End. Martha outlived him by two years.
