Thirza Champ Goff was born in 1838 at Poole in Dorset, daughter of Tryphosa Goff, formerly Barrett, and her husband John Goff, a shoemaker. Thirza appears to have been the youngest of several children. In both the 1841 and 1851 censuses, Thirza was living with her parents and siblings at New Orchard in Poole.
Early in 1861, Thirza married a mariner named John Thomas Harris. The census later that year found Thirza and John living in the West Butts area of Poole, with her sister Harriet living with them, whilst her parents were next door. Thirza was working as a straw milliner at this time. Thirza and John appear to have had one son together, Harry Thomas Harris, born in 1862.
In 1864, John was serving as Mate on the Gartcraig, a merchant barque registered at Poole. It set sail on 31st March 1864 from London, bound for Quebec. The ship left the Downs, the area of sea off the east coast of Kent, on 4th April 1864. It was never heard of again, presumably having sunk with all hands on board.
Five years later Thirza married again. Her second husband was a baker and confectioner named Herbert Hutchings, who was nine years her junior. They stayed in Poole, having another four children together. Slightly confusingly, they also had a son called Harry. Perhaps Thirza's son Harry Thomas from her first marriage was known by his middle name. Thirza and Herbert appear in each census together from 1871 to 1911 at addresses in the centre of Poole, seemingly running a bakery and grocery shop together. In both 1901 and 1911 they were listed at 130 High Street, which was clearly quite a large property, as they occupied ten rooms there.
Herbert died in 1927, aged 79. Thirza survived him by eight years. She died on 15th February 1935, aged 96.
