Facts and Events
Theodore Carl Franz Marie de Marillac-St Julien (Count) was born on 5 April 1858 in Swellendam. From his obituary in the Cape Times (1932), '...Theodore, after studying at the Jesuit College in Rome, came to this country, where he settled and married. ... The Count took a keen interest in volunteer matters, becoming a prominent marksman and a one-time member of the old Cape Cavalry. He took part in the Basuto War of 1880-81 and during the Boer War was O.C. Musketry at the Cape.' He married Ann Webster in Cape Town in about 1877. They had nine children. Theodore died aged 74 years at Kromboom Farm, home of Ann A B M Harris, his daughter. His will dated 30 November 1931 stated that he was born in Swellendam and was of French nationality. It continued, 'I desire that after my death my wife Ann de Marillac, born Webster, - we having been married as minors without consent of Parents, our Estates thereby not being in community - and my six children shall be the Joint heirs of all my Estate and effects of whatsoever kind, which I may own at present or which may be inherited by me in the future...' The witnesses were Mary Jane Ridgill and Charles Ridgill. Mary Jane Ridgill née Webster was Theodore's sister-in-law and Charles Ridgill her husband. |
