Facts and Events
BIOGRAPHY: He owned and operated a variety store (Drug Store) in Providence, Rhode Island, him and his partner (Oliver Johnson) opened a wholesale Drug Store on Weybosset Street and ran it until his death.
A spot just in front of where the Catholic Church now stands, was noted as a haunted spot. It is said that William Clapp, when a young man, was passing from his home to the grist mill at Centerville, and when near that spot, he saw what he thought was a man, but as he looked at it, it gradually faded out of sight, and nothing would convince him that he had not seen an apparition. Dr. Sylvester Knight, it was said, observed the same phenomenon. Record of the Descendants of Charles Bowler England - 1740 - America who settled in Newport, Rhode Island Compiled by N. P. It is not known whether the meeting was held in his home or in some suitable building located on his property. The names of Sylvester Knight, John Greene, and Resolved Slack were proposed for the first degree in Masonry. A special meeting was held on December 9th, at which time the above-named were balloted for and were initiated into the first degree of Masonry. They were passed to the degree of Fellow Craft on December 23rd, at which time Brother Sylvester Knight was elected Secretary. On January 6, 1809, it was voted that the regular meetings be held on Friday evenings on or before the full moon, which is still the practice of the Lodge. On February 24, 1809, a meeting of Master Masons was held, at which time the first three candidates, together with fourteen others, were raised to the sublime degree in Masonry. The fees at this time were these: E.A. degree, seven dollars; F.C. degree, three dollars; Masters degree, seven dollars; and membership, seven dollars.
