At Westerly on Saturday last, Sylvester Gavit, Esq. aged 74 years - late Surveyor of the port of Pawcatuck. - In the character of Mr. Gavit were happily blended the striking virtues of the patriot and philanthropist. As a patriot, he shared in the dangers and sufferings of the war for Independence, and discharged the duties of his official stations, with promptness, fidelity and decision; as a philanthrophist, his acts of charity and benevolence has gained him the affections of many, who may long live to cherish the remembrance of his worth.
