Sylvanus pursued a classical course of study and graduated A. B. in 1860 at the Wesleyan University, at Middleton, Conn., and joined the N. Y. Conference of the M. E. Church the same year. In July 1861, he was appointed First Lieut. in the 48 Reg. N. Y. Vols. and was in the expedition to Port Royal, S. C., but resigned his commission, May 1, 1862. In 1864, he was appointed Principal of the N. Y. Conference Seminary, which post, we believe, he held in 1866.
