Facts and Events
Sydney Waddington joined the Tasmanian Government Railways on leaving school as had his father and brother. He became a driver while the railway was still using steam locomotives which included work on the Tasman Limited Passenger service between Hobart and the NW Coast towns. He continued to drive when diesel electrics replaced steam and eventually became freighting only when passenger services were discontinued. During his time as a driver he was involved in one serious accident when the locomative was struck by a large boulder tipping it into a ravine. Fortunately he was not badly injured and was able to see out his career to retirement at 61 after well over 40 years service. He was a keen cricketer playing with the Railways team. He was also a keen bream fisherman making frequent trips to his favourite spots on the Little Swanport River. References
