Facts and Events
[edit] About Sydney FischerSydney J. "Syd" Fischer was born 27 May 1902 in Chicago, Cook County, Chicago, the son of Max Fischer (1862-abt. 1918/19) and his wife Esther "Bessie" Barents (b. 1868). In 1920, Sydney was living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania with his mother (then a widow), and sisters Lillie (age 23), Hannah (age 11), and grandmother Augusta Barents. Sydney worked for many years in the Southern California food industry and owned his own brokerage company, Champion Food Sales, representing manufacturer's products that were sold in delis in many retail supermarkets, especially in the imported cheese category. He was also one of the original founding members of a local trade association, the Southern California Deli Council (now known as the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), and served as its first President in 1960, which still exists in 2014. The idea of establishing a food industry trade association focusing on the deli segment to upgrade the industry, promote goodwill, exchange ideas, keep abreast of industry developments, solve mutual industry problems and gain knowledge and enhance the operation of supermarket deli departments, originated with a conversation that took place in Syd's back yard which included Syd, Harry Schneider, Sam Freed and Bob Kearney. The first meeting of the Deli Council took place in Fischer's home until the group was large enough to be held in a small dining room at the Roger Young Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.Syd Fischer was honored by the Deli Council in September 1964 with its "Big Cheese" Award for his service to the Council. Sydney was known as a jovial character within the organization and was well-liked by all that knew him. Image Gallery
